A physician shaped by five decades of service

Prof. Dr. P. V. Prabhakar Rao graduated in medicine from VSS Medical College, Burla and SCB Medical College, Cuttack (1965–1970), and went on to complete his MD in Respiratory Medicine from Sambalpur University in 1982. He was elected a Fellow of the American College of Chest Physicians in 1988 and of the National College of Chest Physicians, India in 1989.

Across forty-two years of clinical and academic practice, he has held faculty positions at JIPMER (Pondicherry), Kasturba Medical College (Manipal), BLDEA's B. M. Patil Medical College (Bijapur), Nagarjuna Hospital (Vijayawada), GSL Medical College (Rajahmundry), Katuri Medical College (Guntur) and MNR Medical College (Sangareddy), where he currently serves as Emeritus Professor.

His international appointments include Visiting Physician to Foothills Hospital, University of Calgary (Canada, 1990), Consultant Chest Physician at Chest Hospital Al-Taif (Saudi Arabia, 1995–96), Vice Chancellor at the International Medical and Technological University in Dar Es Salaam (Tanzania, 2014–15) and Vice Chancellor of Washington University of Barbados (Caribbean, 2017–18).

This single sentence has guided every appointment, every research project and every community oxygen centre. Teaching is not a residue of clinical work; it is the work. Research is not a curriculum-vitae line; it is the engine of better bedside care.

A recognised PhD guide of NTR Health University and post-graduate examiner for the universities of Allahabad, Calicut, Delhi, Goa, Kerala, MGR (Tamil Nadu) and the NTR University of Health Sciences (AP), as well as post-doctoral examiner for Banaras Hindu University, Prof. Rao has built a quiet curriculum: clarity over jargon, examples over slogans, and the patient at the centre of every lecture.
